While this predictability can be comforting, it didn’t leave much room for context or individuality. But now, a new breed of well-designed hotels are attracting sophisticated travellers not just to tourist hotspots but also to the hotels as destinations unto themselves. Here is our pick of the most noteworthy ones.

Options – The Edge – Sushi master Masaaki Miyakawa and his elite culinary team from Tokyo’s acclaimed Sushi Shin is having a 10-day pop-up at EQ Kuala Lumpur’s Kampachi restaurant. Guests can enjoy an authentic omakase menu designed by chef Miyakawa, whose eponymous restaurant in Sapporo boasts three Michelin stars, until November 10.

The Malaysian Reserve – If the name EQ seems familiar, it’s because the site it’s built on used to house Hotel Equatorial. As part of its ongoing Nipah Delight dining promotion, the hotel is offering buffet lunch at a steal. I, for one, found it worth the money if you’re going for a buffet.

South China Morning Post – Shoot up to the 51st floor of luxury hotel EQ and let the dazzling new rooftop bar that is Blue take your breath away. Here, evening feels infinite, like stepping into a sky full of stars; a magical effect created by the ceiling’s twinkling lights splayed across flanking mirrors and the city’s glittering skyline. The view afforded by the open-air lounge is mesmerising, boasting sweeping vistas of the KL Tower and Petronas Twin Towers on either end.
