Travellers Tips

Helpful hints for travellers.

Currency
Money and travellers checks can be exchanged at banks and money changers. Major credit cards such as Master Card, Visa, JCB and American Express are accepted at Hotel Equatorial Shanghai, major hotels and department stores. Check on the acceptance of your credit card before making your purchase as smaller establishments might not accept credit cards.
Do take note that the Renminbi is not easily convertible in some countries and it is advisable to check with your local bank.

Visa
Visas are required for all foreigners entering mainland China except Brunei, Japan and Singapore passport holders who can enjoy visa-free access to China for not more than 15 days.  Standard tourist visas, valid for 30-day visits, are generally easy to acquire, while visas valid for more than 30 days are usually difficult to obtain.  Visitors are advised to consult their travel agent, China International Travel Service, China Travel Service, any PRC Embassy or Consulate for details.

Dress
Dressing in Shanghai is casual but modest. Bring along some heavy clothing for the winter as temperature can drop to biting degrees with strong winds, whereas light clothing is adequate during summer.  A suit and tie for formal occasions is widely accepted.

Health
Visitors to China are required to fill in a health declaration form at the Customs. Medical facilities are generally adequate in Shanghai.

Drinking Water
Tap water is best consumed after boiling.  Bottled drinking water and mineral water are also widely available. Ensure that food is well cooked.
