Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's premier
hill resort location. Located in the mountainous spine, known as
Banjaran (mountain range) Titiwangsa, in the Pahang state. The
highlands was named after William Cameron, a colonial government
surveyor who discovered the plateau during a mapping expedition in
1885. The fame of Cameron Highlands then grew during the colonial era
when British planters realised the potential of its fertile mountain
slopes for growing tea, then a prized commodity. Still home to
many tea plantations, the area is also known as a major supplier of
legumes and vegetables to both Malaysia and Singapore with its many
farms, and is one of Malaysia's prime tourist destinations.
Geographical Area of Pahang
Pahang covers an area of 35,960 square kilometres, is the largest state
in Peninsular Malaysia. Cameron Highlands is a highland region
located about 20 kilometres east of Ipoh (and about 150 kilometres
north of Kuala Lumpur) on the east side of the border between the
states of Perak and Pahang in peninsular Malaysia. This hill
resort is situated 1,520 metres above sea level; and comprises of a
series of little townships that include Ringlet, Tanah Rata, Brinchang,
Tringkap, Kuala Terla and Kampung Raja.
Climate
Malaysia has an equatorial climate with uniform temperatures throughout
the year. Temperatures range from 32°C during the day to 22°C
at night.
As for Cameron Highlands, being located at 1,520 metres, above
sea level it is the highest area on the mainland, and enjoys a cool
climate, with temperatures no higher than 20 °C and rarely falling
below 10 °C year round.
Currency
The Malaysian currency is the Ringgit (RM), which is divided into 100
sen. Notes range from RM100 to RM1 and coins are from 50 sen to 1 sen.
People
Malays who make up about 57% of the population are the predominant
group with Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups making up the rest.
Language
Bahasa Melayu (Malay) is the national language but English is widely
spoken. The ethnic groups also speak various languages and dialects.
Religion
Islam in the official religion but all other religions are freely
practised.
